The Annual General Meeting will be held at 6pm on Sunday 8th January at the Hope and Anchor and all members are encouraged to attend.

The AGM is where the club members get the opportunity to decide who they would like to be involved in running the club as it gives the members the chance to elect the officers and officials including team captains and committee positions. At the moment all current officials are standing for re-election for the 2012 season.

If you would like to stand for election to any of the roles within the club then you will need to be nominated and seconded by members of the club. To do this you will need to let the committee know that you would like to stand for the post by emailing info@denbighcricketclub.co.uk but please note that the two members nominating you and seconding you will also need to email this address to confirm that they are putting you forward. These nominations will need to be received by 31st December 2011. If more than one person is put forward then details of the people standing will be circulated to all members in the week before the meeting and a vote will be held at the AGM to decide who will be given the post.

If you have any queries on this please email David Roberts: info@denbighcricketclub.co.uk

Can all members make a big effort to attend the meeting as this is where decisions are made that will affect you for the coming year.

A highly successful year for Denbigh Cricket Club was celebrated at the annual club dinner and presentation evening. For the second successive year we returned to Denbigh Golf Club where the welcome is always warm and we are looked after superbly by Cliff and his catering team and of course Michelle behind the bar.

With Mayor of Denbigh Medwyn Williams and his wife the Lady Mayoress in attendance, Medwyn even delaying his holiday to attend the evening proving beyond doubt I think that the event is un-missable, we were able to celebrate the outstanding performances of the season.

Mayor of Denbigh Medwyn Williams

First XI captain Ben Wilcox-Jones was the first to take the stage and he began by highlighting the incredible achievement that the team had managed to accomplish with the final mid table finish in the first season in the Premier Division a highly creditable performance by the whole squad.

Moving on to the individual awards for the First team Ben began with the bowling award where he highlighted a number of performances in contention including Harrison Jones’ figures of 6-62, the winner though for a match turning and match winning performance of 5-34 in a game v Mold Alec Lewis took the trophy.

Alec Lewis

It was a similar story with the batting performance as a number of players had made outstanding innings through the season, Gwern Owain in his first year with the club had a fine year and his 94 v Brymbo was mentioned as was Thomas Schrimshaw for a breathtaking 101* bating at 8 against eventual champions Connahs Quay. The man to take the award this year though for what Ben termed a season defining innings for the side that won a vital match, was Gerallt Lyall with his 84 against defending 5 times champions Llandudno.

Gerallt Lyall

Champagne Tom Schrimshaw

Despite being unlucky to miss out on the batting award, Schrimshaw’s innings did however earn him the ‘Champagne Moment’ for the season, as Ben selected the moment he reached his century as the outstanding individual action of the season.

Always viewed as perhaps the most prestigious award of the season, chosen as it is by your fellow players, the Players Player award was won by the continually impressive Harrison Jones who had yeat another fantastic season with both bat and ball taking 29 wickets and scoring 481 runs.

Harrison Jones

After Ben had finished the ceremonials for his team 2nd XI captain Stuart Moulden took up his own residence as the master of ceremonies to hand out the awards. Stuart then regaled the eager audience with a recap of most of the season, recalling most if not all of the incidents from the games. Ever a man of the people and keen to give the audience more of what they wanted Stuart’s reminiscing continued through to the culmination of yet another successful season for the team who were unfortunate to finish just outside the promotion places. Always a showman however Stuart eventually left his followers wanting more and moved on to the individual awards.

Stuart Moulden

As with the first eleven a number of bowlers had returned fantastic figures over the course of the season with Chris Brown and Dafydd Lewis mentioned in dispatches but the ever consistent Jack Griffiths was announced as the worthy winner for his incredible spell of bowling against Llay where he returned a formidable 5-11 in an opening spell of bowling that was impressive as it was unplayable and thoroughly deserving of the accolade.

Jack Griffiths

The batting award for the team was also a close run thing, with no centuries this year there were however a few stand-out innings that could have taken the prize Dafydd Lewis was in the runs once again his top score 89* at Connahs Quay ‘Mr. Consistency’ Daniel Nixon had weighed in with an imperious season total of nearly 600 runs with some eye-catching individual innings, his brother Darren had also performed well and his 90* v Hawarden Park just missed out. The honours with exactly the same score of 90* though went to David Roberts who managed to post a match winning knock v Marchwiel & Wrexham in a game that helped Denbigh maintain their push for promotion.

David Roberts

Players Player for the second eleven was however a formality and there was only ever going to be one winner this year. By a unanimous decision of which he should be justly proud, Daniel Nixon claimed this award for the first time. His runs were important but his bowling was also vital as he bagged over 30 wickets for the first time in his career, often claiming that crucial partnership breaking wicket. His final season figures of 596 runs and 33 wickets a truly remarkable return.

Daniel Nixon

Daniel would also claim the ‘Champagne Moment’ although whereas the first eleven award was for performance on the field of play Daniel claimed this award for his efforts while rolling the pitch for the last game of the season that led to the whitewash paint being imprinted up and down the pitch.

Always keen to promote the use of spin bowling in North Wales cricket the club has an award dedicated to the arts of spin and despite strong claims being made by Daniel Nixon again, the award for the outstanding spinner of the year went to Harrison Jones.

Harrison Jones

As well as rewarding our junior players at a dedicated junior prize giving ceremony we also look to recognise those juniors who have made the breakthrough into senior cricket. In this respect Junior player of the year went to Jack Griffiths while most improved junior player went to Andy Clarke

Jack Griffiths

Andy Clarke

Both of these junior players have had excellent seasons and should look to continue their fine progress in the future.

The all-rounder award is open to both teams for an outstanding all-round performance in one game. As with the 2nd XI players player there was only one serious contender for this award and it was Daniel Nixon again who took this highly acclaimed honour after his magnificent 5- 39 with the ball and 67 with the bat against Connahs Quay

Daniel Nixon

As well as rewarding performances on the pitch the club also takes great pains to recognise the efforts of those who contribute massively to keep the club operating. Chairman Andrew Wilcox-Jones has instigated the Chairman’s prize for the member who has shown outstanding effort for the club throughout the season. This years recipient for his ongoing work with fundraising including his work on the Geraint Thomas cycle ride was Craig Stubbs.

The final award of the night is one of the most prestigious that the club has, certainly the winner receives the most prestigious trophy the Colonel Swayne Trophy. This is to recognise the efforts of someone who has gone beyond the cal of duty thorugh the season and has contributed massively to all of the club activities. The thoroughly deserving winner this year for not only his work with the junior teams but also his work on the Club Development and Accreditation was Chris Brown.

Chris Brown

So another successful evening and all of the winners undoubtedly deserved the accolades for their performances and endeavours.

Quay Take The Spoils As Denbigh Fall Short

Connahs Quay 154 all out

Denbigh 103/ 8

Scorecard

It was a case of so near yet so far for Denbigh as their promotion hopes were dashed at the final hurdle in this winner takes all clash. Knowing that nothing less than a 9-1 points victory would do for promotion and with the Quay needing just 3 points to guarantee promotion there was definitely the feeling that each run and wicket would be vital.

Damp weather before the game left the pitch looking a touch green and unpredictable so home skipper Stuart Moulden had no hesitation in asking the visitors to bat first on winning the toss. The Quay are formidable opponents howver and Denbigh found it incredibly difficult to make the all important breakthrough and struggled perhaps to take advantage of the conditions, gifting too many balls that were despatched to the boundary. Whenever wickets have been needed this season however Moulden has turned to slow bowler Daniel Nixon who has developed a fantastic knack of breaking partnerships and he was straight into the action again here dismissing Popplewell for 44 stumped by Joe Lewis. Dafydd Lewis was the next to strike taking a caught and bowled chance to remove Luke Bennett. The dangerous Kevin Jones was looking in good form before he fell victim to another of Nixon’s patented brand of bowling, bowled for 10. At this point Denbigh scented the possibility of a middle order collapse as wickets were falling regularly. Stuart Moulden pulled off a fantastic return catch and then followed this up by bowling Richard Smith first ball, he was unable to claim the hat trick but Denbigh were now into the tail. Unfortunately for the home team they found themselves up against a man in form in the shape of Jonathan Evans, his 31 allowed Connahs Quay to make it to 154. Denbigh did however manage to restrict the batsmen and Chris Brown in particular deserves praise for his final over in which he took 4 wickets to finish the innings.
Knowing that to reach Division 2 they could lose just 2 wickets in their chase, Denbigh were facing adversity immediately as they were deprived of the services of regular opener Lee Mason thanks to a hand injury sustained as he attempted a sharp catch while fielding. Stuart Moulden shuffled his pack and asked Daf Lewis to open the innings with Daniel Nixon. Needing a big performance though Denbigh quickly found themselves in trouble, Nixon the victim of a highly disputed decision to be given out caught behind when general consensus was that the ball had knicked his pad on the way through. Dafydd Lewis managed to find the boundary twice before he mistimed a shot and was well caught leaving Denbigh needing more than 130 without losing any further wickets. The unfortunate player to be next man out was David Roberts as he could only inside edge the ball onto his stumps out for a duck as Connahs Quay celebrated conformation of their promotion. This allowed the Denbigh batsmen to bat with more freedom although Andy Clarke and Joe Lewis took a different tack looking to frustrate the visitors with their batting. Lewis played resolutely to claim 29 runs from 38 overs and while eyeing a not out he fell in the last over. Others however took a different approach and Craig Stubbs was the highlight smashing 24 off 23 balls in yet another entertaining innings.

So as the season closes Denbigh found themselves just short of promotion in a highly encouraging and successful season. Their late season run took them to the brink but they look back ruefully to the dropped points elsewhere that ultimately cost them. Another season however that has seen the emergence of even more junior players capable of holding their own in the senior ranks. Jack Griffiths has emerged as a genuine opening bowler who is also a capable lower order batsman. Sam Lewis has also found his feet as an opening bowler and fine fielder, while Andy Clarke took important wickets and batted well in the middle order.

Next season promises much for Stuart Moulden’s charges.

Last Minute Heroics Keeps Denbigh in Promotion Hunt

Denbigh 154/9

Ruthin 151 all out

Denbigh win 6-4

Scorecard

One thing that can be relied upon when these two Vale of Clwyd rivals play each other is that the result will always be closely fought. This game however must rank amongst one of the finest finishes for Denbigh in recent years. As they have demonstrated time and time again in this season’s run in they can be categorised as the Manchester United of their division in their ability to grind out crucial last gasp victories.

The game proved to be a real rollercoaster affair with the advantage alternating throughout the afternoon. After losing the toss on a damp wicket and being asked to bat Denbigh found the going tough as the unpredictable bounce made it difficult for the batsmen to develop any kind of timing of their shots. Lee Mason battled hard for his 22 but with 3 wickets down and just 34 runs on the board Ruthin were definitely in the driving seat. Dafydd Lewis and David Roberts steadied things slightly to add 33 for the 4th wicket as Lewis began to find his range but when he was caught by a breathtaking catch by Oli Gray, Denbigh were wallowing at 80/5. Andy Clarke and Craig Stubbs added 30. Stubbs was out soon soon after Clarke for 20 but it was another important Jack Griffiths lower order innings that took Denbigh over the 150 mark. Griffiths has shown that he is a vital late order batsman and his 28 from just 26 balls proved to be pivotal in the final result.

Knowing that to have any chance of promotion going into next weekend’s winner take all game at home to Connahs Quay they needed to claim the lion’s share of the points, the visiting bowlers set about their task in steady fashion. Sam Lewis was the first to strike and wickets then fell at regular intervals with every bowler getting involved in the action and at 93/7 Denbigh had a big win in sight. They were then made to toil as Oli Gray and Owen Hughes showed their top order what they should have done with an incredible 8th wicket stand. Gray in particular smashed anything in his range and despite chancing his arm a number of times he looked to be leading his side to an unlikely victory. With just 5 runs needed and Ruthin with 3 wickets in hand Denbigh skipper Stuart Moulden turned to his opening partnership of Griffths and Lewis. First Lewis bowled the obdurate Hughes and when in the next over Griffiths forced the batsman to play onto his own stumps with 4 runs still required Denbigh sensed that they could sneak the victory. Panic seemed to set in as Gray attempted to finish the game with one shot despite having ample time to reach the target in singles. Lewis was proving to be the ultimate ‘at the death bowler’ as he offered no width and tempted Gray to attempt an unlikely sweep which Stuart Moulden did well to judge and take a highly pressurised catch and complete the Denbigh escape. Last man out Gray had scored 47 to take his team to the brink of victory.

The extraordinary victory here leaves Denbigh with their destiny in their own hands at the top of the table. They entertain 2nd place Connahs Quay at Saturday knowing that nothing less than a 9-1 points victory will do to take them up to Division 2. With that all important momentum and belief that they have after five wins on the bounce they approach the final game of the season it would be wise not to write off their chances.

A ferocious batting onslaught saw Denbigh sink to a heavy defeat as they signed off their last home game of the season.

Having won the toss and deciding to bat first skipper Ben Wilcox-Jones decided to open the innings himself but when he departed with just 9 on the board the tone was set for the rest of the innings. The home side desperately needed batting partnerships to enable them to build a total but wickets were lost too regularly for any resistance to be seen. The core of the innings proved to be Tom Schrimshaw who yet again showed his class in this standard as he passed 500 runs for the season on his way to a fluid 46. The manner of his dismissal typified the innings however as he slashed at a wide delivery to present a catch to point. Gerallt Lyall batting in an unfamiliar position lower down the order added 20 and Alec Lewis managed to restrain his trademark Caribbean approach with a patient 28 as the home side reached 170 all out.

Early wickets often prove important and Denbigh have certainly managed to strike quickly this season and with the visitors 2 wickets down without any runs on the board the home side were ecstatic. Both wickets had been taken by Marcus Adams who reaffirmed his knack of claiming the top order batsmen. Unfortunately for Denbigh this only seemed to awaken the Bangor batsmen who then set upon the bowling with ferocious intent. Robert Marshall did the bulk of the damage smashing 72 off just54 balls with 9 fours and 4 sixes as he and Gwilym Lloyd Jones added 127 for the 3rd wicket to take the game away from Denbigh. Harrison Jones finally removed Marshall but his replacement Kevin Williams continued in much the same vein blasting 30 off 23 to see his side home.

An unfortunate way to finish for the season at your home ground but in a season of highlights Denbigh can be forgiven for coming up against an inspired Bangor batting attack.
