Denbigh 2nd XI 230-5
Connahs Quay 2nd XI 158 all out
Denbigh won 8-2
A good win for the 2nd XI away to Connahs Quay 2nds on Saturday, who were top of the division as the first half of the season came to a close.
Denbigh won the toss and decided to bat under blue skies on what is regarded as one of the finest batting tracks in North Wales. This was proved as an opening partnership of 41 between the Nixon brothers Daniel and Darren led the visitors off to a good start before the senior partner Darren threw his wicket away caught for 18. Joe Lewis was then run out cheaply and a collapse loomed. A fine steadying partnership of 103 between Dafydd Lewis 89* and Daniel Nixon 67 then rebalanced the innings before Lee “Pablo” Mason smashed a quickfire 30* including a mammoth maximum off the last ball of the innings to take Denbigh to a total of 230-3 from their 45 overs, skipper Moulden deciding against the declaration of last week.
Despite the fine total it appeared that it might not be enough as the Connahs Quay openers had soon taken the score to 70 runs of 11 overs when Lee “Pablo” Mason swiftly ran out J Abraham for 29. With the pacier bowlers struggling this led Denbigh captain Stuart Moulden to turn to his slow bowlers with Daniel Nixon proceeding to take a match turning and match-winning taking 5-39 of 8 overs supported well by Matty Griffiths 2-4 and Darren Nixon with 1-20. The bowlers were helped by the fact that in the field Denbigh held their catches and chased and parried every ball that was hit their way on what was a sweltering afternoon. This win takes Denbigh Seconds to fourth in the table as the second half of the season begins.
